Reaching Every Birth Attendant with Maternal and Newborn Care Training: Implementation Research Experiences from Uganda

Presenter: Emma Williams, Jhpiego

An implementation research project in 12 districts of Uganda is evaluating a combined training in postpartum hemorrhage prevention and Helping Babies Breathe for frontline health workers at 126 facilities. We tracked health workers’ exposure to the intervention over time – by creating unique provider identification numbers, periodically updating rosters of health care providers, and recording providers’ names on practice forms – to understand measurement issues related to intervention coverage. This session will describe how longitudinal tracking was undertaken, challenges that were encountered, how they were overcome, and why this kind of linkable information will useful for understanding the intervention’s impact.
