Having an accurate blood pressure (BP) measurement is important to ensure correct identification of hyper- or hypotensive patients. Unfortunately, many providers fail to accurately identify hypertension or shock, largely because of the unavailability of suitable BP measurement devices and limited attention paid to the techniques and procedures necessary to obtain an accurate BP measurement. The Microlife Vital Sign Alert (VSA) is a non-invasive digital BP monitor using oscillometric technique and an upper-arm blood pressure cuff. The device also incorporates an algorithm for the detection of hypovolemic shock. The VSA has been validated for pregnant women as well as males and non-pregnant females. Use of this machine will improve timely diagnosis of BP disorders and shock. This device addresses multiple challenges to taking accurate BP measurements. This interactive session will demonstrate use of the Microlife VSA and provide opportunities for hands-on skills practice.
