Chlorhexidine for Umbilical Cord Care

A recently cut umbilical cord is an entry point for bacteria that can cause newborn sepsis and death. Ensuring optimal cord care is a crucial strategy in preventing life‐threatening sepsis and cord infections and in averting preventable neonatal deaths. Clinical trials have shown that 7.1% chlorhexidine digluconate for umbilical cord care reduces the risk of death by up to 23% within the first 28 days of life. This display will highlight gel and liquid forms of chlorhexidine products as well as advocacy, training, and behavior change communication materials, and we will demonstrate the chlorhexidine market-sizing tool.
