A Comprehensive Approach to Health Systems Management for RMNCH in Tanzania

Presenter: April Williamson, USAID’s Maternal and Child Survival Program/Results for Development

Health managers often achieve poorer RMNCH outcomes than expected because they are not equipped to adopt a holistic approach to addressing the weaknesses of the system’s ‘building blocks.’ There is extensive evidence about improving elements of health systems to enhance RMNCH effectiveness; but these elements are rarely systematically addressed together at subnational levels. We will present tools from our Tanzanian pilot of a “Whole Market District Approach” to health management for improved RMNCH outcomes. This involves working with district managers on system mapping to identify gaps, assets, and opportunities, and applying the results to systematic and strategic planning and implementation.
